Here's just a QUICK TASTE of how athletic we are!

Sport in the Falkland Islands is a major part of life

and does consist of a lot of FOOTBALL!

The islands have 4 main teams who play in

A league, as well as challenging the MILITARY TEAMS from the army base at

Mount Pleasant Airport. (WE KICK THEIR ASS!)

GOLF, FISHING, HORSERACING, RIFLE SHOOTING, MOTORCROSS are common

Outdoor sports, and other major sports such as NETBALL,

RUGBY and BADMINTON are also played at the

local indoor Leisure Centre.

FOOTBALL games provide good entertainment on a

Sunday afternoon as the atmosphere is always highly

competitive but cheerful!

THE GLOBE TAVERN is the most popular team with us…

…MARTYN GILSON CLARKE is the STAR player, having

recently been signed up by the BOCA JUNIORS - the top

PROFESSIONAL Argentine club and now plays and

socialises alongside the legendary

DIEGO MARADONNA.

 Stanley football pitch ~ also set to be the site of Stanley's Millennium celebrations!

 

 HORSE RACING takes place about 3 times a year - the CHRISTMAS RACES start on Boxing Day

and go on for 3 days - each night is followed by a celebratory/prize giving DANCE to which

EVERYBODY attends! The MUSIC is country and Western (!!)

Which is a disappointment, but everyone still makes the BEST of it!

 WATER SPORTS all year round are popular - despite the freezing cold waters -

JETSKI'S are available for hire, strong winds and sheltered coves

offer good conditions for SAILING and WINDSURFING.

DIVING in the Falkland's is fantastic, although dry suits are needed to

Withstand the cold! SURFING could be an option -

the WAVES are big - but no one I know does it!

Are impossible…snow falls during the winter but never enough to do more
